Why everyone on Gilmore Girls talks a mile a minute. Reddit Pocket Flipboard Email. On Gilmore Girls , subtext is king The key to understanding the way Gilmore Girls thinks about dialogue is in the first fight we ever see between Lorelai and her parents, in the pilot. How is that a "speaking of which"? Next Up In Culture. Delivered Fridays. Thanks for signing up! Check your inbox for a welcome email. Email required. And it's pretty damn annoying. Here's what the Gilmore girls are good at talking about: coffee, Pop-Tarts, The Bangles, the variety of cuisines they can order from Al's Pancake World, obscure movies, Rory's education, and all the reasons Emily Gilmore is the worst.
Here's what the Gilmore girls can't talk about to save their lives: relationship issues and any sort of conflict. Most, if not all, of the Gilmore problems come from the two women avoiding key conversations, instead burying their feelings like it's their leftover Chinese food in the fridge.
It happens from the get go spoilers ahead! And Rory hides from her mom that she's met the new hottie Dean, and he's the reason she no longer wants to go to Chilton. When both things come out—surprise! And that pattern keeps happening in an endless, Twilight Zone -like loop in the series. The show's motto is "Life's short, talk fast" but it should really be "Life's short, talk fast, avoid any real conversations and find yourself in prickly situations.
It happens constantly between the two Gilmore girls, and also between a Gilmore and whoever they're dating. Take Rory, for example: Rory likes Jess more than Dean, but she can't bear to say it. Instead, she strings Dean along until he eventually breaks up with her. When Rory and Jess finally get together, their relationship implodes because they make out instead of talking about any real issues like Jess's 99 emotional problems.
Later, Rory thinks she and then-married Dean are on the same page when they have sex, but she never really has a conversation with him about it. Then, she runs away to Europe for a summer instead of discussing her new status as a mistress. And, later on, Rory just assumes she and Logan can figure things out when he goes to London, but, again, they never actually talk about what his time abroad means for their relationship.
